The Teaching Brush
ANIMATE WALLS AND TEACH
We are a group enlivening the walls of government schools with murals that the kids can learn from.
My name is Ankith Ratakonda. I created a group of like-minded people who are equally determined to fulfill our goal: To make education engrossing for government schoolchildren and to expose them to the arts.
WHAT WE DO
Our main goals are to make schools colorful, to introduce art to the children and to make education enjoyable. We obtain the school's principal's permission to refresh their walls, which is the hardest part because who would allow a group of teenagers to paint their walls? After that, we schedule a date, get the materials, ask for volunteers, figure out transport, and finally, we paint. We love to involve the children in the painting process. We will never forget the children's smiles of experiencing the joy of art for the first time.
The Teaching Brush is a non-profit initiative that brightens up the barren, rundown walls of India's government schools with murals of educational content. These murals are in the central high-traffic areas of the school where the children will be able to see them multiple times every day. Our goal is to create a colorful environment and, at the same time, educate the children subliminally.
The idea struck in the summer of 2018 while contemplating activities for the summer. I love art and wanted to use it to make a difference. I had taught in government schools for underprivileged kids. It was a very gratifying experience, but I remembered how rundown and drab the schools are. Putting the two together was easy and that’s how “the Teaching Brush” came into being.
